The Basics: Environmental Health and Wellness

August 1, 2012

I love being in a beautiful space. The kind of space that makes your jaw drop in awe. The kind of place that makes you stop, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. The kind of place that makes you laugh and smile. I simply love it. I occasionally watch HGTV, and I enjoy “Curb Appeal” and “Design on a Dime.” It amazes me that people can have the ability to turn a space from boring or chaotic to appealing and organized. Where is your favorite place? Take some time and think about it. Is it a place that is familiar to you, like your parent’s or grandparent’s home? Is it a place you have never been, but long to go, like an island, or the mountains, or another country? Is it a place in your home, like a quiet sitting room where you can find some alone time? Is it a place surrounded by people and sounds? Is it indoors or outdoors? Get a clear picture in your mind’s eye. Think about the positive feelings you have when you think of, or find yourself in this favorite place of yours.

Now, I want to ask you to do something. As long as you are safe to do so, I want you to close your eyes, and take yourself to your favorite place for just a minute (or a few seconds). I’m serious. I want you to really close your eyes and imagine being in your favorite place, and engaging your senses in the sites, sounds, smells…and so on. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Wasn’t that refreshing? Maybe not, if you weren’t able to really focus or imagine your way there. It can be hard to imagine yourself to a tropical island, when you have a crying baby clinging to you, or you are simply overwhelmed by the list of things you have to get done. Whether you were able to take that mini mental vacation or not, I think you get the general idea. These places, our favorite places, are very important to us, as well as our overall health.

There are so many beautiful places in the world. It seems that when you are in these special places, you can just be free. You can relax. You can think. You can solve all the problems in the world, or accept that the world is full of problems and be at peace. There is something about being a special place that can help you feel uplifted and more positive.

This section of the blog, “Scrumptious Surrounds,” is all about being in, and creating, a healthy environment in which you can live. Everyone does not have the blessing of having their favorite place in their own home, but often, we can create an environment around us that a brings peace, and positive energy. This can be supportive to the health of the planet, as well as ourselves and the people around us. We can also do wonders for our mental health by taking time out to be in the places that we love…the places that inspire us.

Some topics that will be covered in this section include: organizing, straightening, themes, flow, harmony, matching, colors and mood, open spaces, light, energy, comfort, simplicity, balance, self-reflection, the environment as an extension of you, and healing versus toxic environments. You may have to roll up your sleeves a bit, but, it is all in the name of health and wellness. Let’s have fun, as we identify and create healthy environments that promote our overall health and wellness!
